Amazon Ecommerce Video Production

Project Overview

The Client: Wonder Family — a beauty brand preparing to launch a new bubbling clay face mask on Amazon's US marketplace.

The Task: Produce a full set of Amazon-compliant photo and video content for advertising materials, strictly following Amazon's listing requirements, targeting American consumers. The challenge: deliver everything from San Diego, without traveling to the client's location.

The Result: A 60-second product demo video in two edit versions, plus 10 base product photos ready for Amazon advertising — completed in 3 weeks from brief to final delivery.

Project Execution

The Brief: Amazon Has Rules. Every Frame Must Earn Its Place.

Amazon's ecommerce video production requirements leave no room for creative improvisation. Resolution, length, format, content restrictions — all enforced at upload. Beyond the technical specs, every frame had to serve a specific function in the customer's decision journey: if a shot doesn't move the buyer closer to "Add to Cart," it doesn't belong in the cut.

The 60-second product demo video had to tell a complete story:

  • Unboxing — model unpacks the mask, packaging clearly visible
  • Texture reveal — clay squeezed from the sachet, consistency and color shown on camera
  • Application — mask applied to face; the bubbling effect captured live (the hero moment of the product)
  • Fun effect — model takes a selfie, conveying the playful, shareable experience
  • Result — mask washed off, model smiles at clean, glowing skin

The photo session required two models across six shot types: packaging in a bathroom interior, mid-shots with clean skin, mid-shots with mask applied, macro texture on hand, macro close-ups at every stage of bubbling, and final beauty shots with clear skin.

Challenge #1: Casting for a US Audience

For content targeting Amazon's American market, model selection was a strategic decision. The visual typecasting had to match what resonates with US beauty consumers — natural, relatable, aspirational.

The team and the client jointly reviewed candidates and selected two:

  • Elizabeth — theater actress and model. Selected specifically for the video role: her ability to perform authentic, expressive reactions was essential. The "bubble moment" — a face covered in an actively foaming clay mask — requires a performer, not just a model. A stiff reaction in that frame kills conversion.
  • Kate — professional model, selected for the photo session. Clean, classic look that translates well across beauty product cards.

One creative direction — casting a model of color for broader US market representation — was evaluated and set aside for this phase at the client's request.

Production note: Casting is the most underestimated decision in Amazon product demo video production. An actress who conveys genuine delight at a bubbling mask will outperform a static model on every click-through metric.

Challenge #2: Studio Setup — Cyclorama + Wet Zone in One Location

The product created a specific technical requirement that most studios don't combine: a cyclorama (seamless background for clean product shots) for the photo session, and a wet zone (running water, sink access) for the mask application and rinse sequence in the video.

Finding a studio that offered both in a single rental — without relocating equipment mid-shoot — was a pre-production task that paid off on shoot day. One setup. One lighting rig. Two deliverables.

Challenge #3: Capturing the Bubble Effect on Camera

The product's core claim — visible bubbling on skin — had to be captured convincingly. This is technically harder than it sounds:

  • The bubbling happens in real time and cannot be replicated on demand
  • Lighting had to reveal texture without washing out the foam
  • Focal length and working distance were chosen to make individual bubbles legible without making the skin look clinical

Multiple takes were required at each stage of the bubbling process. The macro close-up series — from application through peak foam to pre-rinse — became the most technically demanding segment of the shoot.
