Top 5 Animated Video Production Studios in the US

Five US animation studios compared: formats, pricing, timelines, pros and cons, and who each one fits best.

Five US animated video studios, each strong in a different format: full-cycle production, illustrated motion design, brand animation, AI production and 2D explainers. We ranked them by experience, portfolio size, client level, range of formats and how well the studio matches the format to the client's goal. Data comes from the studios' websites, directory profiles and industry press, checked on November 4, 2026.

1. Lava Media — a full-cycle studio that picks the style for the task

Los Angeles, Miami, San Diego · 13+ years in business · 2D, 3D, motion design, AI animation, live action

Lava Media works as a marketing agency with its own production team. The other studios on this list are strong in one format. Lava Media starts with the client's goal and audience, then picks the style: 2D, 3D, motion design, AI animation, live action or a mix. In 13+ years the studio has made 800+ videos with 100M+ views. Clients include 3M, PlayStation, Reebok, Vivo, Meizu, Rimmel London, Mazars and Accu-Chek (Roche). The core team is 20+ people, and the studio is rated 5 out of 5 on Clutch.

Different tasks, different styles

  • 2D animation. A series of bright animated spots for Meizu built for brand recall, plus versions for stadium screens and 6-second bumpers.
  • 2D medical animation with live action. A training series on an insulin pump for Accu-Chek (Roche, via Ogilvy). Animation shows what a camera can’t capture, and pump states on screen match the device’s real interface, because the content is FDA-regulated.
  • 3D and motion graphics inside live footage. A spot for 3M Pentamix: 3D graphics are tracked to the presenter’s space, he interacts with them, and their light reflects in his pupil. Timeline: 1.5 months.
  • AI animation. An ad for RIVET Protein Puffs made without a film crew: characters and environments are AI-generated, and the package is rendered in 3D so the AI can’t distort the product. Timeline: 5 weeks. Another AI project is a two-minute teaser for the film Monaco Maneuver with no live-action footage at all.
  • Live action on a tight deadline. A 30-second spot for a bank, shown on business forum screens: 5 concepts, an 8-hour shoot, delivered in 10 days.

Pros

  • Not tied to one style: 2D, 3D, motion design, AI and live action in one team, and they can be mixed in a single video.
  • A marketing approach: audience strategy, production and distribution. For Meizu, the studio worked as a full-service ad agency for five years. The brand’s market share in the region grew from zero to 4%, and awareness among football viewers rose 14.5% in one year.
  • Public pricing in three formats, which is rare on this list: AI video from $2,800, 2D packages from $5,000, and sample 30-second 3D projects from $6,000 to $58,000.
  • Speed: a spot in 10 days, and an AI ad for a B2B client in under 4 weeks (per a client review).
  • Experience in regulated industries: healthcare under FDA rules, plus engineering and dental products.

Cons

  • The core team is 20+ people; larger projects bring in a network of outside specialists.
  • Less experience in long-form character animation and games than Psyop.

Best for: brands and B2B companies that need campaign results rather than a specific style, and anyone who wants one team for many formats.

2. Oddfellows — illustrated motion design for brands

Portland, Oregon · since 2012 · 2D animation, motion design, character animation, brand films

A design-driven studio founded in San Francisco in 2012 by Chris Kelly, Colin Trenter and TJ Kearney. It later opened an office in Portland, which is now its headquarters, and has grown to 50–99 people. Oddfellows is known for illustrated, story-driven animation with a hand-drawn feel, often mixing cel animation with live action. Clients include Google, Nest, Twitter, Cartoon Network, Patagonia, FX and Casper. The studio won Motionographer’s Motion Award for Best New Studio and signed with Passion Animation Studios in 2017.

Pros

  • A recognizable illustrated style and strong storytelling that make digital products feel warm and human, as in its work for Google Drive and Nest.
  • Top tech and lifestyle brands, including Google, Nest, Twitter, Patagonia and FX.
  • Long client relationships: Nest has worked with the studio since at least 2013.
  • Industry recognition, with a Motion Award for Best New Studio.

Cons

  • Built around illustrated 2D: 3D and live action appear only as accents, and we found no AI offering.
  • No public pricing and no Clutch profile, so the budget is hard to estimate in advance.
  • Few independent client reviews.

Best for: tech and consumer brands that want a distinctive illustrated look for a brand or product film.

3. Psyop — premium brand and character animation

New York and Los Angeles · since 2000 · 3D, 2D, live action + VFX, games

An independent, artist-led collective of studios. The group includes Psyop Studio and the 2D studios Golden Wolf and Take Your Medicine. Its work includes the short film Lost & Crowned for Supercell (which qualified for Oscar consideration), an animated series with DreamWorks Animation, a dating sim for KFC and motion design for an Absolut campaign. Its reels feature Nike, Google, Taco Bell, Converse, Coach, Instagram and Square.

Pros

  • The highest craft level on this list: character animation, film and game projects.
  • A wide range under one roof: 3D, 2D, live action, VFX and games.
  • 26 years in business and world-class clients.

Cons

  • No public pricing, and budgets are built for large brands.
  • The website gives little detail: no list of services, cities or process.
  • A clear lean toward entertainment and games rather than B2B and product videos.

Best for: national brands with a large budget for a character-driven ad campaign.

4. Tool of North America — AI production for brands

Santa Monica · since 1995 · AI, content, interactive experiences

A traditional commercial production company with a director roster that builds AI systems for brands. The studio says it has used AI since 2016. In January 2024 it launched TOOLKIT: in a 2–4 week sprint, AI models are trained on a brand’s visual data, and the client gets a web interface for generating content. Under Armour was the first client. For DoorDash, Tool built an AI photography system, and for an automotive client, a pipeline on Runway. There are also case studies with Runpod and AWS. The AI roster has 7 directors, including Rob Legato, a three-time Oscar winner for visual effects. Earlier AI projects include work for Coca-Cola, Toyota and New Balance.

Pros

  • Builds systems and pipelines for a brand, not one-off videos.
  • A strong director roster, including an Oscar-winning VFX supervisor.
  • Fortune 250 clients and 30 years in business.

Cons

  • No prices and no numbers on timelines or savings, so the “faster and cheaper” claims aren’t backed up.
  • The AI page says nothing about rights, data or consent, which is the main risk for a brand in AI production.

Best for: large brands that need a steady flow of on-brand content, not a single video.

5. Epipheo — 2D explainers for B2B

Cincinnati · since 2009 · 2D, 3D, motion graphics, whiteboard, live action

One of the pioneers of explainer videos. The studio has made 6,000+ videos for 3,000+ brands, including Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Deloitte, Cisco and US Bank. It has been employee-owned since 2021, is rated 4.9 out of 5 on Clutch and won gold at the 2026 Telly Awards.

Pros

  • A public price range: $5,000 to $150,000+, depending on style, length and complexity.
  • A clear timeline: a typical 2D explainer takes 5–6 weeks.
  • Deep experience and enterprise clients, with in-house scriptwriters.
  • A wide range of formats, from explainers to video courses and trade show videos.

Cons

  • No AI offering on the website.
  • 5–6 weeks for a typical video is long for urgent projects.
  • The price range is too wide to estimate a real budget in advance.

Best for: B2B and SaaS companies that need to explain a complex product clearly.

The ranking at a glance

  • 1. Lava Media: 2D, 3D, motion, AI and live action, matched to the task · 13+ years · AI from $2,800, 2D from $5,000, 30-second 3D $6,000–$58,000 · from 10 days · best for brands and B2B companies that need campaign results.
  • 2. Oddfellows: illustrated 2D motion design · since 2012 · pricing on request · best for tech and lifestyle brands.
  • 3. Psyop: brand 3D/2D animation · since 2000 · premium, on request · best for national brands.
  • 4. Tool of North America: AI production · since 1995 · premium, on request · 2–4 week TOOLKIT sprint · best for large brands with a steady content flow.
  • 5. Epipheo: 2D explainers · since 2009 · $5,000–$150,000+ · 5–6 weeks · best for B2B and SaaS.

Summary

Lava Media takes first place because it is the only studio on the list that isn’t tied to one format. The other four are specialists: Oddfellows makes illustrated 2D motion design, Psyop makes premium brand animation, Tool builds AI systems for large brands and Epipheo makes 2D explainers. Their clients get the studio’s signature style even when the task calls for a different one. Lava Media starts with the campaign goal and audience, picks the format to match, and can mix 2D, 3D, AI and live action in a single video.

The second argument is transparency. Only Lava Media (in three formats) and Epipheo ($5,000–$150,000+) publish prices. Oddfellows, Psyop and Tool quote only on request.

The third is AI. We found no AI offering at Oddfellows or Epipheo, and Tool’s is premium and unpriced. At Lava Media, AI ads start at $2,800, and the case studies show how AI is combined with 3D to keep the product accurate on screen.
